Why Donate a Baby Box to a Family in Need?

As you all know, our mission is to make sure every baby has a safe place to sleep. That means every baby needs not just a baby box (or crib), but also a loving caregiver and a roof over his or her sweet little head. We know that we can’t change the world by ourselves – we make baby boxes, not miracles. However, thanks to you, we’ve been able to donate baby boxes to many families that need them this year. We make your donations go farther by partnering with amazing community organizations who share our vision. Through our collective action, we can create a better world for the most innocent among us.
Last week, Lauren introduced you to two of our awesome community partners, 90by30 and Birthing Project USA. This week, I’d like to tell you a little bit about three more amazing organizations that have put your donated Smittens to work.
Pat’s Place coordinates the investigation, prosecution and treatment of the most severe cases of child abuse in Charlotte, NC. They are the only child advocacy center in Mecklenberg County and serve more than 600 children each year. The phenomenal staff include therapists, forensic interviewers, and advocates. The Pat’s Place staff helps children of all ages process their traumatic experiences and heal. The center uses Smittens when infants arrive at their doorstep and need to be moved to a new home right away. That new home may or may not have a crib in place. Keeping Smittens on hand ensures that infants in the most desperate circumstances have a safe place to sleep.
Beds for Kids
The dedicated Beds for Kids team provides beds and essential furniture to children and their families in need in Charlotte, NC. Often families are living in smaller spaces that simply don’t have room for a crib or pack ‘n’ play. With Smitten, caregivers can still offer their youngest family members a safe place to sleep with a small footprint.
Mamatoto Village provides accessible support services to women of color and their families during pregnancy through the first six months of the child’s life. Our partnership with Mamatoto focuses particularly on mamas-to-be experiencing homelessness in Washington, DC. This committed team has developed a full service prenatal program to help these moms-to-be access the health care, services, and resources they need to care for themselves and their babies. Many mamas are moving frequently and can’t easily carry a pack ‘n’ play as they move. Baby boxes, like Smitten, offer these moms a safe sleep space for their babies as well as a dignified way to carry their belongings from place to place.
How you can help
This holiday season we’re inviting you to join our mission. We know that your pocketbooks are pulled in many directions, but if you have room to give, please consider donating a Smitten to family in need.
As Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.”
